Plan Backward To Achieve Your Goals

I met this man on a railway train and he taught me a good technique for reducing tension. A distinguished looking gentleman, he was headed for business convention in the South. He settled down in his rommette across from me, pulled out a small briefcase and proceeded to surround himself with various stacks of paper. He had brought his office with him, and he was getting ready to go to work right there on the train. But before he starting, he did a strange thing. From his briefcase he pulled a black enamel plaque about the size of a postcard. Written on the plaque in large white letters were two words: PLAN BACKWARD. The man propped these words on the table before him and went to work.Curiosity finally got the better of me, and I leaned across the aisle and said, ‘Pardon me, I hope you don’t mind if I ask you a question?’

The gentleman took off his glasses and looked at me and said that he didn’t mind at all; what could he do for me?

‘Well,’ I continued, ‘I’ve seen a lot of these signs that say PLAN AHEAD. But I’ve never seen on that says PLAN BACKWARD.’

He laughed. ‘All it is,’ he said, ‘is a reminder to myself that I’ve got to organize my time.’

‘But why the backward? Why not ahead?’

‘Because,’ he said, ‘planning backward contains the idea of a specific goal. You choose a goal, picture yourself accomplishing it, then plan backward until you know exactly where and when you must start.’

Plan BackwardThis is one of the success strategies that mentioned in one of the books I read recently, from Dr. Norman Vincent Peale. It is a brilliant idea indeed. You should apply this idea in your life as well.

You decide where you want to go in your life, you decide your destination, and you plan backward, you strategize how you can achieve it. In other words, you reverse-engineered it. For example, you decide how much you’re going to worth in the next 10 years, how much you’re going to earn and where are you going to live. After you’ve decided this, plan backward and create a roadmap on how you can get to this point in your life 10 years from now.

In fact, to achieve what you want in your life is simple. You just have to decide what you really want in the future, visualize it, create a plan on how you can achieve it and keep on taking action to make it comes true. However, many people don’t know about this, they thought that they need a lot of materials to achieve it. They thought that they need to have a lot of money to achieve what they want. They just don’t have the time to make what they want comes true.

It is the excuse that you gives that prevents you from getting what you want in your life.

And because it is this simple, many people don’t even care about it. When you ask someone where will he be in the next 10 years or what he’ll be doing in the next 5 years, he’ll answer you he don’t have any idea about it. This is the biggest difference between someone successful and someone who live an ordinary life.

It is easy if you want to be successful and achieve what you want in your life. Just keep on thinking about what you want and where you want to go. Think about it 24 hours a day. If you do this, I’m sure that you’ll automatically come up with a plan of how you can achieve it.

This is the success strategy that successful people are using. They think about what they want most of the time instead of thinking about other things which they don’t want.
