Hope Is A Duty
HOPE IS A DUTY
Dr. Henry Viscardi was born without legs, and spent his first seven years as a charity patient in a hospital. He struggled to survive as a severely crippled child and as a young man, horribly deformed. The world was unkind and ignorant of the challenges facing him, in a body 3 feet 8 inches tall. Only at the age of 27, did he get his first artificial legs. Suddenly a whole new world was opened to him, and it transformed his life. He began helping armless and legless veterans at Walter ReedHospital during the World War II. He found the woman of his dream and together they had four daughters. Dr. Viscardi founded the Long Island Human Resources Center for Disabled Child and Adults. He turned his adversity into an opportunity to teach thousands of physically challenged people to have faith and believe in themselves and their potential. In one of his renowned speeches he quoted, “Hope is a duty, not a luxury. To hope is not to dream…but to turn dreams into reality. Blessed are those who dream dreams and are willing to pay the price to make them come true. As for me I do not choose to be a common man. It is my right to be uncommon if I can. I seek opportunity, not security. I want to take the calculated risk, to dream and to build, to fall and to succeed. It is my heritage to stand erect, proud and unafraid to think and act for myself. I have a wish for you. It is the same with I have for disabled people. I suppose the conventional thing for me to do would be to wish you and them success and happiness for the rest of your lives. But success and happiness as the world measures it is too easy. I would wish you meaning for all the remaining years of your life.
SUCCESS PRINCIPLES
How are we, compared to Dr. Henry Viscardi? Most of us are gifted with good health and a perfect physical body, and yet we are nowhere compared to the courage, persistency, contributions, and positive mental attitude of this physically deformed man. Most of us are not handicapped physically, but it is a shame that we are mentally crippled. It is this “mental suicide”
