Event + Response = Outcome

Now this is truly a motivation article, read this and I believe that you will get motivated just like I do. Well, before we start, you should know that the law of polarity exist in our world. What is this law of polarity actually? It is the same concept as Yin and Yang, for every outside, there is an inside, for every north, there is a south, for every crisis, there is an opportunity, for every head, there is a tail, and so on and so forth.

Law of Polarity

So what it has to do with our life? Very simple, everything you do, there must be something opposite. I still remember that in the movie ‘The Matrix’ (one of my favorite movies), the Oracle told Neo, “Everything that has a beginning has an end”. It is the same as in the law of polarity. The meaning we choose to attach to an experience is the meaning we create. When we interpret an experience as negative or bad, we will get into a miserable state, take lousy actions.

In the meantime, if you interpret something as positive, you will straight away get into resourceful state, you will get motivated straight away. So can you see it now? It is how you choose to respond to what is happening to you. What you choose to respond will determine your outcome. One of my previous post, I wrote about how Oprah Winfrey transform her life from deep down until she becomes a successful person. It is a must read, if you haven’t read it, you can read it here, The Oprah Winfrey Success Story.
Here is a famous quote:

Event + Response = Outcome

This wonderful formula is given by Jack Canfield (Co-author of Chicken Soup for the Soul). Many people believe that it is the events around us that shape our outcomes. They believe that it is the events that happen toward those successful people that makes them successful. If you don’t believe me, ask your friend, what makes Bill Gates so rich, what makes Warren Buffet so wealthy? I’m sure they will say something like they are lucky, they hit the market at the right time, etc, etc.

What people never see is this, the hard work behind those successful people. Do you think that Bill Gates or Warren Buffet achieve all these amazing results all by being lucky? That is impossible. You and I both know that this is totally untrue. It is not the things that happen to us, but rather how we choose to respond to happenings and external circumstances that ultimately shape our outcomes. Here is one thing that is very important, in fact, if you can handle this thing well, you can handle your life, you can even change your life and achieve what you want. This is the fact:

“As you know, we cannot control every single thing that happens to us, but we can control how we choose to respond to it.”

For example, if you go sailing, you cannot control where the wind is going to blow. You can complain and blame the wind all you want but it is not going to be of any use. However, you can control how you maneuver the sails, and that will control the outcome of your boat’s direction. This is why people often say this,

“I can’t the direction of the wind, but I can adjust the sail to always reach my destination.”

There are so many real-life stories that have proved this principle, this law of polarity. One classic example is this, How A Woman Transform From $50,000 Dept Into A Multi-Millionaire. So as you can see now, we have heard so many stories of people who were born with all kinds of handicaps and despite all the odds stacked against them, they managed to create a life most others can only dream about.

When we look at things (an experience, an incident, an event) from one perspective, it may seem totally bad. However, when we change the way we look at the same thing, i.e. from a different context, the meaning completely changes. In other words, there is no meaning in life except the meaning we choose to give it.

It depends on your perspective, the frame in which you are seeing it from. People who succeed and live fulfilling and enriching lives don’t experience better events, they just re-present things and respond in a much more powerful way. So I hope that after going through this article, you will learn the law of polarity. It is the meaning that you choose to give that matters. Remember this, life itself is meaningless, it is how you choose to give meaning to your life that shapes your life.
